3 of the Best vs 3 of the Worst – Marvel’s Post-Credit scenes

3 of the Best vs 3 of the Worst is exactly what it sounds like – 3 of the best examples of either an actor, film series, genre, etc. versus 3 of the worst. It’s also an opportunity for you to have your say on my choices and whether you would have placed something ahead of my best or my worst. Today is the Marvel’s mid and post-credit scenes…

Since Iron Man the first movie in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, when Nick Fury emerged from the shadows, the scenes in the middle or at the end of the credits have helped link the movies in the franchise and become a key part of each of the superhero films. Some offer glimpses of future movies while others are just funny asides.

Others are a waste of time. Some feel pointless and if you are going to sit through five minutes of credits to see an added scene, it should be something worthwhile. So here is my run-down of three of the best and three of the worst of Marvel’s post credit scenes…

(Note: This list contains a spoiler for Ant-Man!)

3 of the Best

Iron Man 2 – Thor’s Hammer

Most people knew that Thor was next on Marvel’s movie slate but it was still very exciting getting the first real glimpse of that hammer in a crater in the desert. Considering all we’d had to far were heroes that had been on-screen before, the prospect of Thor joining the Marvel Universe properly was an exciting one.

Ant-Man – Wasp’s suit

It had been hinted at and mentioned throughout the movie but the reveal of The Wasp suit and the revelation that Evangeline Lily’s Hope Van Dyne would be taking up the mantle in a future Marvel movie was enough to raise a smile. Add to this the very telling response when she realises she will be a super-powered, female superhero – “It’s about time!”

Iron Man – The Avengers Initiative

The one that started it all. That moment when Samuel L Jackson emerged from the shadows and uttered words that no superhero fan would ever dream of hearing – The Avengers Initiative. To think that this was Marvel’s plan from the very beginning and then to be at the point where we have had two Avengers’ movies is such an unbelievable thought.

3 of the Worst

Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron – Thanos

These weren’t terrible, just anti-climaxes. The reveal of Thanos was decent but doesn’t really demonstrate who he is, why he is such a threat or why people should be excited about what is yet to come. Plus the second post-credit appearance was just a repeat of the first!

Avengers – Shwarma

This is a perfect example of adding a scene for the sake of it. If Marvel Studios wants to make a habit of adding a post-credit scene, make it worth the audiences time. Make it something cool.

The Incredible Hulk – Tony Stark and Ross

This feels like there was a bigger plan. It also feel rushed and added hastily. The fact that it is supposed to be a post-credit scene and doesn’t even come after the credits means it never really feels right. It doesn’t make much sense now you go back to it and it turns out that it has an explanation in one of the Blu-Ray extras rather than being an actual important scene in the whole franchise – a waste.

Overall, it was difficult to choose for both categories. There are a few post credit scenes that could have made the cut, eg. Groot dancing in Guardians of the Galaxy or on the more negative side, Thor and Jane sharing a kiss. I’m sure there are others you’d have rather seen so feel free to add your suggestions.

This one was a close contender too
