I love trailers. I think there is a special skill to putting together a good trailer. It must capture the attention and entice an audience but give very little away so that the viewer doesn’t feel like they’ve already seen the movie. Very few trailers master this but there are many that try and get very close. Every day I will highlight a new trailer which manages to successfully get me excited for a movie. Todays is a modern take on a well-known detective story…
Some stories have been adapted so many times that there is little more you can do to make any version different. The Murder on the Orient Express is one such story, even having been set in space with the Mummy as a killer in one of the more recent Doctor Who offerings. This trailer should have presented a drab, dull, by-the-book retelling but instead seems to offer something slightly cooler.
The trailer itself is very effective, using on-screen labels to help distinguish the individual characters played by the stellar cast. You can see for yourself but Dame Judi Dench, Michelle Pfeiffer and Johnny Depp are just a few of the great line-up. Their choice for Hercule Poirot seems genius too.
Overall, not a film I’d have been particularly excited for but the trailer has definitely peaked my interest. A great cast and a cool way to market a very well-known story.
