Impractical Jokers: The Movie (2020) Review

Impractical Jokers: The Movie (2020) - IMDb

Impractical Jokers is my favourite TV show. The chemistry between the friends, the improvised nature of the show and the way it remains as hilarious now as it ever was makes it one of the best comedies on TV. Unscripted shows have managed a successful transition to the big screen before, Jackass being the best example, and this is largely because they took advantage of the larger screen, wider scope and bigger budget and you felt like you got something different from the regular TV show.

Impractical Jokers does try this to a certain extent but instead of focusing on making the unscripted, prank parts of the show bigger and different, instead they introduce a completely unnecessary scripted element. It has some impressive guest stars, Paula Abdul being the most important to forced story, but the actual plot is fairly average and worst of all, not very funny. The best aspects of Impractical Jokers was always the elements where the four friends were just being themselves and riffing off each other and they lose that as they try to turn their original show into something more scripted.

The film doesn’t take advantage of the best elements of the show

When the film is focusing on the challenges and the pranks which made the show so successful, you start to see some of the original magic. Some of the challenges take advantage of the big screen format, mainly delivering content which is more mature than they could get away with on the small screen. Some of these are fantastic and work very effectively but disappointingly, too many of them don’t quite hit the mark and are at best, average compared to what you get week to week on the regular show. If you are a fan of Impractical Jokers, there are some great fan service moments and aspects which will raise a smile but there isn’t enough of the original shows magic to satisfy.

Overall, Impractical Jokers the Movie has its moments and some of the challenges offer a more mature, slightly different take on what you would get in the regular show, but this isn’t enough. There isn’t enough of the original magic which makes the show one of the best on TV and the forced scripted elements actually detract from the better parts of what makes Impractical Jokers so effective.

Rating – 2.5

(1 – Awful, 2 – Average, 3 – Good, 4 – Great, 5! – Must See)

Less scripted elements and more focus on the friend’s chemistry and this could have been a much better movie
